AI Image Generation And Fandom & Shippers - Why Generalized AI NSFW Art Is Unappealing To Fervent Communities

Anyone with a device that can support a screen and the latest browser software can go online and find an AI Image Generating App or a website, type out a prompt, set some parameters in place, choose specific details, and hit the go button and get a compelling result soon after from the AI (assuming the model is of the better kind). But as we all know, AI is trained on existing content, and its specifications are reliant on human-driven corrections, retraining, and coding, which eventually creates a category library inside the AI’s mind to which it can refer back to. But at the end of the day, AI is reliant on existing media to take notes from, so what happens if there is barely anything out there, and how does NSFW fare?

Fan Creations Budding

Why do people wish to create character art? It is simply because fans are excited about the fantasy people, either through design, dynamics, personality, or just how cool they are! The excitement is the greatest when romance is on the table, which we now know as shipping culture. The shippers are adamant about pairing up any characters with a good dynamic, either from the same universe and book or from two wholly unrelated fictions. These fans also feel the need to see physical and visual affirmations of their ships, so they may resort to drawing the scenes. This is how the infamous colored pencil drawing of the Harry Potter characters in NSFW settings came to be, as even the most amateur art is still better than nothing, and the creator can define the pose and activities manually. Of course, the AI NSFW art is tempting as well.

Issues With AI NSFW Art

What’s the biggest issue with AI art in NSFW spaces? Some quote the lack of passion since even the hyper-precise NSFW art that looks realistic might lack the energy an NSFW scribble holds. But what we can see is that AI art as a whole is unable to create the level of detail that shippers and fans deem acceptable. Simply put, if the character is not from a popular series or if the series is new and without significant cultural presence, the results the AI produces are nothing more than just some guy or gal with a minor resemblance. That’s not a beloved character; it's some other person with a close enough resemblance. Moreover, the art style might not even fit with the setting the character comes from, which adds another layer of barrier on what is already a difficult request.

Handling Pairs And Ships

If you noticed, AI art typically handles best requests with a single person. It can present a cut-off group scene where the central character is the main draw. This means that the core of the NSFW community that resides within fandoms will have very little use for it. That might look like the hot girl everyone likes, but an invisible character is doing her, and that’s a bit boring. While general lewdness is not a problem and is still sought after, the inability of AI to create convincing pairings immediately cuts the appeal in half. Fans and shippers go to great lengths to draw the Predator paired up with Yuri On Ice characters just because they can and because it's appealing, but the AI was trained to cut to the chase and only shower the viewer with instant, shallow gratification. The intrigue, character complexity, and bizarreness are lacking from AI NSFW art, which demotes the medium as a whole.

What Is AI NSFW Art Good For?

The nature of the human mind is complex and deep, and the internet is the digital proof of how unhinged people can be when given the liberty to express it. Fetishes and kinks are included in this, and the AI is an excellent source for rarer fetishes that are hard to find even on the internet. That said, the style and framing of most NSFW AI images seems to be trained on professional softcore pornography, as well as on video caps from porn movies that hold a frozen screen in place. This was no doubt done because such media is of high quality and consistent, where fandom NSFW art is often a chaotic mess. With an anime filter, any character can look like it's from a certain media, but the extent of success has been locked.

  • Naked Photos: AI is amazing at generating nude, highly erotic images of characters no matter the generative style. The AI is also very effective at converting poses and bodies into new styles like Furry. These solo photos are beautiful and attractive to those who like the art style.
  • Fetish Shots: Expanding on the concept of solo nude AI art, another tier of complexity and appreciation is how easily AI can make a character (who looks close enough) or edit an existing image to fit a certain fetish. Be it pregnancy fetish or something else, AI has seen great success here.

The Fans Demand More

AI NSFW Art is made to create instant gratification and deliver fetish images at the drop of a coin and spin of a generative button. This is fine when looked at from a pornographic stance, but if AI creators wish to reach the lively and motivated fandom and shipper communities, the coders will have to teach their creations to handle a couple of images better. Even more than that, the AI will need to learn how to make characters that look even closer to the source and not lose out on any wild details, like how Vaporeon might be paired up with something that isn’t even a Pokemon. The AI models will likely need to specialize based on target communities, as an all-purpose AI is a far cry from what shippers crave. Until that is settled, AI NSFW art will likely stay on the back burner as mid-grade nudes.
